Growing up in an extremely working-class area, social commentary within academia was not something I was exposed to until I started my bachelor's degree. Even starting a degree was a farfetched idea, as a first-generation university student who learnt of UCL through an outreach programme for underrepresented yet high-performing individuals. Academic papers felt daunting and confusing, comprised of concepts and words I was assumed to know yet never taught. Once I finally began to understand how to read academic articles and the jargon within them, I realised they contained ideas that would have found fascinating years before I came to university. I felt frustrated that commentary on the very basics of our lived experience was so elitist and exclusionary, and so De Flore was born.

I am aiming to continue my studies through a PhD surrounding my research interests which will start in 2023.

De Flore, for me, came out of a repeated frustration with academia, frustration at complex papers and books, frustration at paywalls, and frustration at the lack of access I was given to essential insight into the workings of society. On top of this, what was presented to us on PowerPoint presentations, always felt exclusionary, to those who should hear it, basic knowledge that everyone should have access to. While It might sound like an exaggeration to some, it is the under-education of the population in the dimensions and histories of society that, in part,  allows oppressive power systems to prevail.

After a PhD, I aspire to hopefully one day become a researcher and lecturer at university, striving to change the system from the inside out.
